The beauty of our county is unsurpassed! Located in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains, the most prominent of the natural wonders is Table Rock Mountain on our northern border.
Burke County has a long and rich history. Burke’s heritage is reflected in many beautiful mansions and stately homes. Among the restored properties are the old Burke County Courthouse and the McDowell House.
The county seat is Morganton. Events are offered throughout the year in downtown Morganton and other areas. Lake James, the Catawba River and the area's hiking trails are beautiful venues for outdoor activities including hiking, boating, canoeing and kayaking. The Greenway runs along the Catawba River and provides a great venue to prepare for the area's road and bike races!
The mountain communities of Gingercake Acres and Upper Creek Acres, located in the northernmost corner of Burke County in the Jonas Ridge area, are popular retirement and vacation home destinations. Bordering the Pisgah Forest and the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, they are frequented by hikers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers.
More information on historic homes is available at North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office. They have information on grants, tax credits, restoration, and other resources. Another website to check out is Preservation North Carolina. Morganton has an Historic Preservation Commission that can also offer you information.
